"How can somebody stand as president if he has received a payment that is disloyal to FIFA? "It's a very difficult positon. As the facts come out only then will we know, but at this point in time it feels like Platini's campaign is rocking." In a statement, Platini said: " I was asked by the Swiss authorities to provide information relating to the ongoing investigations surrounding FIFA. I have always been open to supporting the relevant bodies and authorities in their investigative work and therefore cooperated fully.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini says sorry to supporters

Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini has written an open letter to the club's fans apologising for recent poor results.

Coloccini claims the players and staff at St James' Park are all united and he has called on supporters to back the team in their fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Leicester was Newcastle’s eighth in succession, leaving them just two points above the relegation zone with an inferior goal difference to four of the five teams below them.

Newcastle boss John Carver met with managing director Lee Charnley and senior players at the club’s training ground on Monday amid reports of serious unrest amongst the squad following the loss to Leicester.

Thousands of fans have boycotted the last two games in protest at the way the perceive owner Mike Ashley to be running the club.

Newcastle’s final games see them travel to relegation rivals QPR, either side of home games against West Brom and West Ham.

The letter on the club's website said: "I don't usually speak publicly too often, but today I feel the responsibility to talk to all of you for several reasons in which you are involved, every bit as much as we are as players, staff, directors and every person that works for the club.

"Firstly, on behalf of the squad we would like to apologise for the moment we are going through. Needless to say this is not anything intentional.

"Neither players nor staff would like to be in the position that we are in at the moment.

"This is something that has happened for many reasons and right now there is no time to look back and correct those mistakes.

"The time we have left to turn around this situation is short but after the end of the season we will try to learn from the mistakes we made so that we don't have to go through this again.

"This is as painful for us as it is for you, because when this team comes onto the pitch we do so with the intention of winning and to defend not just the colours of this club, not just our shirt, but also to represent thousands of fans, the whole city.

"We do so understanding that a victory at the weekend means a week of joy for this city that breathes, lives and loves football like no other city in England.

"Today we are in a delicate situation, one that we have been through before, and it is one of the most uncomfortable situations in the world of football.

"Uncomfortable because this club doesn't deserve to be in this position, a position that puts its status at risk. And this is what I want to highlight; this is the most important reason for my letter.

"Players and staff have come together in order to leave all past problems aside and to focus 100 per cent on the three 'cup finals' that we have left.

"I would like to make a call to all fans today to also leave aside all differences, all different opinions, anything that divides us as people who love this club.

"On Saturday, please come to St. James' Park, create a great atmosphere, support the team more than ever, because at the end of the day what matters the most here is Newcastle
United Football Club.

"Years will pass and so will players, directors, coaches and managers, but what is always going to be there is yourselves, your children, your grandchildren.

Jill Scott: Manchester City Women player banned for headbutt

Manchester City midfielder Jill Scott will serve a three-match ban following her headbutt in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.

Scott, 28, was shown a red card after reacting to a challenge by Gunners defender Jade Bailey in the Women's Super League One match.

The England player will now not play a competitive match before this summer's World Cup, which starts on 6 June.

She will miss City's FA Women's Cup semi-final versus Chelsea on 4 May.

Scott is also ruled out of league fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea.

England, who are expected to name their squad on 11 May, will have her available for a friendly against World Cup hosts Canada on 29 May.

Scott earlier tweeted: "I want to apologise for the incident which led to me being sent off. Gutted to let everyone @MCWFC down."

City manager Nick Cushing said the incident was "out of character".

"She's been an exceptional player for us and she puts in unbelievable performances every week so it's disappointing," he said.

"We'll get together as a club and deal with it internally."

England manager Mark Sampson told BBC Radio 5 live: "It's an incident that no-one is proud of and it's disappointing.

"We don't like to see our players behave like that but credit to Jill, she has apologised and made it clear it was an out-of-character incident.

"The players are under lots of pressure but they have to make sure they behave in a manner that befits the England jersey."

Arsenal had taken the lead in the first half when Chioma Ubogagu slipped the ball under City keeper Alex Brooks.

Cushing said being reduced to 10 players hindered his side's chances of getting back into the match.

"We started the second half well, we looked like we were really pushing, but the red card was an own goal," he added.

"This team has an unbelievable work ethic and sometimes enthusiasm takes over intelligence."

Sherwood has produced a series of impressive results since he took over from Paul Lambert two months ago, and his side reached the FA Cup final on Sunday thanks to a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley.

Their attention now turns back to the Premier League, where they sit four points outside the relegation zone with five games remaining.

Cleverley feels, regardless of the competition, it is Sherwood's more attacking game plan that has turned their fortunes around.

"He has brought an attacking style of football. At times we gamble, and it is a case of entertaining the fans and that's what was needed to bring back to the football club," Cleverley said.

"Along with some fantastic defensive displays, we are good to watch and it's a great team to play in.

"I'm playing with four fantastic midfielders here so it's an absolute pleasure to play with them every week and I'm really enjoying my football."

Villa's Premier League future will have been decided by the time they face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on May 30 and Cleverley is already looking forward to a second day out at Wembley.

"I think the FA Cup final is a one-off day. Hull nearly managed to do it against them last year and we'll be going into the match in full confidence," he added, speaking to TheFA.com.

"When we have played Arsenal this year we have been in bad spells, but hopefully come Saturday, May 30, we will be right on form.

"It hasn't sunk in yet that we will be playing for a major trophy in a massive final - it's a hugely proud moment."

Pictures published on The Sun's website appeared to show Sterling passing out unconscious after taking the substance, which is described as a legal high.

The report surfaced as Sterling was playing - and scoring the opening goal - in Liverpool's Premier League game against Newcastle at Anfield on Monday night.

Contract talks'

The incident comes after a recent stand-off between the player and club over a new contract, with Sterling having rejected a new deal.

Liverpool have now confirmed they will not discuss a new deal with Sterling until the end of this season, after a request from the forward's agent.

Reds chief executive Ian Ayre said: "Raheem's agent has asked that we park all discussions regards his future until the summer. We respect that.

"Raheem is a Liverpool player and has over two years left on his contract. We expect Raheem Sterling to be here for a long time."
